Events Details

Exhibition Dates: May 15, 2024 through December 31, 2025

Step into the vibrant world of Pop Art with Andy Warhol’s iconic Cowboys and Indians portfolio, a captivating set of ten screenprints created in 1986, just a year before the artist’s passing. This collection, presented on Lenox Museum Board, showcases Warhol’s signature style through bold colors and cultural commentary, exploring themes of the American West. Each piece measures 36 by 36 inches (914 by 914 mm) and is part of a limited edition of 250, signed and numbered in pencil by Warhol, with printing by Rupert Jasen Smith and publishing by Gaultney, Klineman Art, Inc.

The portfolio features a diverse array of subjects, including Mother and Child, Northwest Coast Mask, Kachina Dolls, Annie Oakley, General Custer, Indian Head Nickel, Geronimo, Plains Indian Shield, Teddy Roosevelt, and the striking John Wayne. The John Wayne portrait, inspired by a 1962 film still from The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, stands out not only for its artistic brilliance but also for its intriguing backstory. Following John Wayne’s death in 1979, Warhol faced a legal challenge from the Wayne family over the unauthorized use of the actor’s likeness. To minimize legal exposure, Warhol inscribed the “John Wayne” prints with “unique,” transforming them into distinct objects as a protective measure. As part of the broader settlement, the Warhol Foundation gifted other prints from the Cowboys and Indians portfolio to the Wayne family, some of which are now on display in this exhibition.

This exhibition invites visitors to explore Warhol’s creative genius and his ability to navigate complex cultural narratives through his art. Join us to experience this remarkable collection and reflect on the enduring legacy of one of the 20th century’s most influential artists.
